10 Things Your Mum Taught You About Running a Business (Without You Even Realising)

When it comes to running a business, there is a lot to be learned. But what you will probably find is that the life lessons you’ve already been taught along the way will be incredible helpful. Remember all the little things your Mum used to tell you, that you thought were intended simply to irritate you? They could actually be the foundation of some perfect business advice.

10 Things Your Mum Taught You About Running a Business

1. Always Keep Learning

Remember the dark, cold mornings when getting up for school was the last thing you wanted to do? There were many times when I just didn’t want to go to school – an often didn’t – and my Mum was always there nagging at me to “get to school, now!”

Turns out that going to school was pretty damn important, and the pursuit of knowledge continues to be. If you continue to learn, you will continue to grow.

2. Life Isn’t Fair

My personal favourite: “But, Mum, that’s not fair.” – “Life’s not fair.”
Everything won’t always go your way, and that’s okay. What is important is the ability to assess what went wrong and find a way around it. You might find that you’re working really hard, only to fail to reach your goals. No, it’s not fair, but only you can change it.

3. Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way

How much do you want it? What are you willing to do to get it? If success in your business means enough to you, you will stop at nothing to achieve it. Set your goals, plan your activity and get to work.

4. It’s Okay to Make Mistakes

Just don’t let them define you. After all, if we never made any mistakes, how would we learn what works and what doesn’t?

5. Don’t Let the Bastards Get You Down

Okay, it might not have been put this way for everyone, but you see where I’m coming from. I’ve come across so many people who have put down what I do but, you know what I do? Ignore it and move on. I’m living my life – not theirs.

6. Rejection is Not Failure

My mum always used to say to me, “the worst they can say is ‘no'”. And, although we might not like to hear it, she was right. Whenever you hear the word’no’, you need to pick yourself up and move on. You haven’t failed, but it’s time to pull out your next move.

7. Don’t Do Things Just For Recognition

Why are you running a business? For me, one of the best things about Network Marketing is the ability to help so many people to completely change their lives. And it’s not recognition that I’m looking for, I’m happy in knowing that I can help someone to make a change.

8. Express Gratitude

Not only will this make others feel good, it will help to change your own mindset. Thankful people are happy people. Expressing gratitude can not only make you feel happy in the moment, but cause a lasting feeling of happiness, particularly when recalling memories.

9. Don’t Fear Change

Change isn’t always bad. Before I started my business, I worked in the same job for a number of years. I loved it at first, but things changed. I stayed out of habit, and felt like it was my ‘comfort zone’. When I left, I felt amazing relief. Similarly, when making business decisions, change can be a great thing. Don’t allow yourself to become stuck.

10. And finally, Always Work Hard

Are you familiar with the phrase, ‘Dreams don’t work unless you do’? Running a business is hard.
You need to be willing to work your arse off for what you want. You can’t expect to succeed if you don’t put in the work.
